Increased demand for fossil fuels and the resulting competition and conflict makes it ever more clear and obvious that we must decrease our dependence on petroleum. Our insatiable thirst for energy fueled by coal, petroleum, natural gas and nuclear power plants has created or greatly contributed to global climate change, pollution and death and misery of all of the planets human and animal inhabitants.

Climate change is bringing huge swings in temperature and changes in precipitation, temperature and violent weather activity. World wide crop failure due to climate change leads to starvation and conflict. As fossil fuels become increasingly scarce and difficult to obtain, corporations rely on dangerous and highly polluting techniques to extract fuel from deep underground, under sea, and from saturated oil sands and shale. Ground water is being made unsafe by this activity and making areas uninhabitable.

The answer to our problems lies on many fronts.

First we must find alternatives to powering our economies with fossil fuels. The most obvious source of energy is the sun, wind, water and plants.

People in companies such as Sirona Fuels, Skip to Renew, and Urban Algae are leading the way to decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Sirona Fuels recycles used restaurant cooking oil and processes it into less polluting and non-toxic biodegradable biofuel and ASTM biodiesel. This used cooking oil otherwise gets dumped into landfills or poured down the drain clogging sewage systems. It also gets used for (toxic to the animal) livestock feed in industrial feedlots.

Skip to Renew manufactures and distributes non-polluting and non-toxic plant and algae based oils and lubricants for industry and consumers. Plant based Bicycle Chain Lube is Skip to Renew’s first product to be introduced. Plant based greases, and hydraulic fluids are in development.

It’s 2012, and the United States has seen yet another sharp increase in gas and diesel fuel prices in-spite of lower demand. The lower demand is no doubt related to the still stale economy and the resultant belt tightening from families with unemployed members, and from consumers fearful of the slow economy.

For me there are alternative fuels to run in my 97 Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel Cummins. It readily accepts all mixes of Biodiesel including B99 and B100. I can burn Jet Fuel, Kerosene, and even veggie oil if I dilute it or heat it up to reduce viscosity.

When Diesel goes up I thank my lucky stars that my friends at Sirona Fuels in Oakland can provide me with B99 Biodiesel at lower cost per gallon than petroleum based Diesel. I usually save 20 to 30 cents a gallon by buying biodiesel in the bay area. Occasionally I have to seek biofuel in Berkeley or other nearby towns if Sirona is closed. Most of the time, they are open when I need fuel, and I am a happy camper.

Stopped by Moschetti Espresso the other Saturday during the free tasting, and after hanging out for a while talking politics and sampling a variety of fresh roasted coffees, I chose three to blend at home for my daily shots of espresso.

I got Brazil for the base. You’ll find Brazil in most coffee blends since it is mellow, tasty and tends to compliment most other expensive or exotic tasting coffee beans. I also got a really nice batch of Ethiopian with it’s telltale aroma and flavors of blue berry. It wasn’t the blueberry bomb of a couple years ago, but it is still a clean and fruity smelling and tasting coffee. I love the stuff. The third bean I came home with was the Burundi.

The Burundi is a huge, aggressive coffee with an earthy base, a towering sweetness, and for several days it had an intense aroma of almonds.

I fiddled around for several days blending. Starting at 1:1:1 ratio of each I found the Burundi to be too aggressive as espresso. It overpowered the Ethiopian and Brazil. I kept decreasing the amount of Burundi and increasing the amount of Ethiopian.

In the end I preferred 4:4:1 of Brazil to Ethiopian to Burundi. At this ratio the sweet fruit of Ethiopian shown through, the Burundi added a very interesting layer of complexity and the Brazil just held it all together.

Big thanks to Fabrice Moschetti for the freshest coffee in the Bay Area.

BMW’s are high performance cars, and folks tend to drive them hard, and tend to use them in city stop and go driving. As a result, Edge Motorworks recommends that your change your BMW oil every 7500 miles or so.

Your BMW is also very high tech and it will tell you when it’s time to change the oil. But synthetic oils have a much longer time period required between oil changes. The oil lasts a lot longer before it breaks down. However, the oil may be in good shape, there is probably a lot of metal particles, sludge and other impurities that show up in your filter. The answer is to change your oil at 7500 mile intervals, and help insure that your engine will last for many thousands of miles and many years.

The Best Drawing Program is one that is no longer supported by it’s corporate owner. The Best Drawing Program is Freehand hands down.

The reason Freehand is the Best Drawing Program is that it is intuitive to use, fairly light weight in it’s memory requirements, and it has a powerful set of tools that are easy to use, and an interface that is minimal as compared to the most complex and obtuse program named Illustrator.

Best Drawing Program

Adobe does it’s customers a disservice by refusing to update Freehand to keep it modern, lean and mean, and working on the latest operating systems for Macs and Windows.

I have changed my opinion on the Victor electronic mouse trap. I have caught about half a dozen rats, and perhaps a dozen mice, or baby rats since I started using this high tech mouse trap. It zaps the mice and rats quite well most of the time. Occasionally a larger rat will survive, and only be stunned, but this appears to be an anomaly. And yes I did get a bit of a shock the first time I used it, but it was a mild shock, and now I know to hold the trap only by the plastic parts, and to not handle the trap while it is energized.

Rat and Mouse Trap Bait

I have experimented quite a bit with various baits to use in the Victor Mouse Trap. Peanut butter is the tried and true bait that mostly works. Sometimes the rodents don’t seem quite so interested in the peanut butter, and so I will use bits of cooked or not cooked meat, including chicken, beef and fresh tuna. I have also used smoked tuna, chicken scratch, bread, cheese, fruit including apples and pears. One particular week I knew we had a rodent, as the dog and the cats all were interested in something under the stove. Nothing seemed to lure the rodent out though. Finally I spied some raisins on the floor that kids had dropped, thought to myself, I’ll bet these work. Tried it and that night I scored with a fresh kill.

I still have a gripe that the victor rodent trap is not easy to clean, and so I reach out to Victor to improve their design so that it is easy to clean the trap. And also to improve on the electronics by having an internal battery indicator to let you know when the batteries are low, and to make it impossible or at the very least difficult for humans to get shocked.
